For many years, I coded and maintained dedicated pages for individual courses, using Dreamweaver and direct code entry to make updates, post items for distribution, etc. UCSC now uses a learning management system (LMS), Canvas, for wrangling of course materials. While the Canvas LMS structure can be limiting in some ways, it offers a lot of advantages for both students and instructors, and it is especially helpful in managing online quizzes, upload of assignments, and posting of scores. Overall, I give Canvas a B+.
Over the last several years, and especially during the pandemic, I migrated all course materials to Canvas. Here is a listing of courses taught in recent years (please see the UCSC course catalog for more information):
- EART 10/L, Geologic Principles/Geologic Principles Laboratory
- EART 116/L, Hydrology/Hydrology Laboratory – I’ve not taught this since 2017. Please check with other instructors.
- EART 146/L, Groundwater/Groundwater Laboratory
- EART 191/ESCI 191, Earth Sciences/Environmental Sciences Capstone Seminar, focused during my recent offerings on groundwater recharge and professional preparation
- EART 220, Groundwater Modeling
- EART 290H, Topics in Hydrogeology – seminar/lecture mixture, most recently focused on geothermics and use of heat as a tracer of fluid flow, have also read papers on a tour through the hydrologic cycle (past and present), and targeted specific areas of interest to the Hydrogeology group and other graduate students.
